Digital ID providers can now seek accreditation within Australia’s Digital ID System.
The voluntary Accreditation Scheme is open to all private sector and government providers operating across the Australian economy.
By becoming accredited, providers will show they have the safeguards that consumers need to safely and simply verify who they are online.
Providers will receive accreditation for demonstrating they:
- comply with the Digital ID Act
- meet the Accreditation Rules and standards for privacy, security, risk management and more.
This shows that the Digital ID providers are committed to protecting their users’ personal information.
Applications will be independently assessed by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (the ACCC) who is the Digital ID Regulator.
After receiving accreditation, providers will be added to the accredited entities register for use by:
- services looking for digital ID providers to verify their customers’ IDs
- consumers wanting to create a digital ID with accredited digital ID providers.
The scheme will build consumer confidence and trust in accredited providers through a Digital ID Accreditation Trustmark.
Accredited providers will be able to display the trustmark to show that their services will handle personal information securely and responsibly.
Accredited providers will also be able to apply to participate in the Australian Government Digital ID System (AGDIS) as it grows over the coming years.
Seeking accreditation now will best place private sector providers as the system expands.
By December 2026, the AGDIS will grow through:
- accepting applications from private sector digital ID providers
- allowing private sector services to join to use accredited digital ID providers to verify customer IDs.
In the meantime, providers can promote that their Digital ID services are accredited to build more trust among users and businesses.
Providers need to complete the relevant accreditation applications forms for their Digital ID services. Before submitting an application, email the ACCC to request details of the submission process.
