The Digital ID Act commenced on 1 December 2024,  please read our article on what's changing for more information.

Create your Digital ID

To set up a Digital ID, you will need to provide the details of your ID documents to a Digital ID provider. The details are then verified digitally with the agency who issued the document. Details can also be verified against characteristics of the document. This will verify that the document is real and owned by you.

When you’re ready, choose an accredited provider (such as an app) to create your Digital ID. You can find a list of accredited providers on the register.

To access Australian Government services with a Digital ID, you will need to set up a myID Digital ID. myID is the Australian Government’s Digital ID app. In future, you will be able to create a Digital ID to access government services using other ID providers.

To get started you will need to:

  • be at least 15 years old
  • have an email address or mobile phone number that only you use
  • have a smartphone or smart device
  • prepare documents that help verify who you are such as your passport, driver licence, birth certificate or Medicare card
  • choose which ID strength you want to set up. The online service you want to access determines the minimum ID strength you'll need.

Digital ID is voluntary

Creating and using a Digital ID is voluntary – it’s up to you.

The Digital ID Act 2024 ensures all Australian Government services have another way for you to access the services. It also ensures that there are alternative ways to verify your ID that don’t disadvantage those who don’t want to use a Digital ID.

Businesses who choose to join the Australian Government Digital ID System will also be expected to offer individuals other ways to access their service. Businesses can apply to the ACCC for approval to require a Digital ID from their customers but this will be limited circumstances, such as being a small online business with no shopfront.
