In a new partnership with the Western Australian Government, more people will be able to access secure systems such as Digital ID.

Setting up a Strong Digital ID requires checking a live selfie with a photo ID. Until now, this level of verification has been limited to people who hold a current Australian passport.

Using Strong Digital IDs improves fraud resilience and protection for individuals including reducing potential for Medicare, NDIS and tax fraud – ensuring only those who are eligible receive entitlements, not the fraudsters.

To enable more people to access the Government’s Digital ID, myID, and with support from the Attorney-General’s Department and the Australian Taxation Office, Western Australia became the first jurisdiction to offer people the option to use their driver licence to verify their ID with photo verification.

myID is now progressively rolling out this capability to 2.2 million WA driver licence and learner’s permit holders.

This will allow more people to achieve a Strong myID when combined with other ID documents, helping to secure their Digital ID.

Digital ID reduces and in some cases eliminates the need to copy, share and store ID documents. People choosing to use Digital ID means there is much less data circulating and in storage that is at risk of theft.
