The 2024-25 Budget committed $23.4 million over 2 years to test and develop the feasibility of offering Commonwealth government-issued credentials to a person’s chosen digital wallet.

The government has been piloting the use of Digital ID technology in the Government System and exploring the feasibility of issuing government ‘verifiable credentials’ to a user’s preferred digital wallet.

This could allow a person to prove what they can do, in addition to who they are—such as digital confirmation of responsible service of alcohol certificates, working with vulnerable people cards, and building and construction white cards.

The government is working with state and territory governments to investigate how to accommodate the use of verifiable credentials in Australia.

The next step is for the pilot is to explore the capabilities of industry to support digital credentials. This includes considering the relative costs and benefits of offering verifiable credentials to Australian citizens.

To inform future decisions on any further funding for an Australian Government system facilitating the use of verifiable credentials, a Request for Information has been released to invite potential vendors to share the experience and skills they could bring to the task of building an Australian Government verifiable credential system.
