The Australian Government successfully demonstrates there is a better, more private and efficient way to apply for a rental property, with benefits for both renters and rental agencies.

A collaboration between accredited Digital ID providers, Consumer Data Right (CDR) recipients and real estate businesses has successfully piloted scenarios that allow rental applicants to use:

  • digital ID instead of scanning and sharing copies of multiple ID documents, and
  • the CDR to prove they can afford the rent, instead of sharing payslips and bank statements.

The outcomes from the pilot align with the recent Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) determination that urges RentTech platforms to stop unfair and excessive personal information collection. The completed pilot demonstrates that it is possible to reduce collection of unnecessary and excessive personal information and still verify a renter’s identity and rental affordability.

Excessive collection and storing of a person’s personal data poses significant risks to renters’ information security and privacy. This risk increases with each rental application they submit to different real estate entities or for different properties.

The pilot shows that real estate businesses can achieve substantial productivity gains, by streamlining the process leveraging Digital ID and the CDR. In a real scenario, there was an estimated saving of approximately $150 per rental listing, and time saving of up to 70 hours per month for real estate businesses. For renters applying for multiple properties, the time savings and reduced paperwork multiply with each application.

The transition from this pilot to real-world adoption will broaden the benefit of using Digital ID and CDR across the market to better protect renters’ personal information, increase productivity, security and deliver a better experience for renters and real estate businesses.
