The Australian Government is piloting and trialling ways to expand the use of Digital ID across the economy to benefit consumers and businesses.

Pilots are one way we can test the potential of Digital ID to protect personal information and make it safer and more secure for people to verify who they are and their financial information.

Pilots commenced following a successful Expression of Interest process in early 2025 that asked for joint applications from accredited Digital ID service providers, Consumer Data Right (CDR) accredited data recipients or representatives, and real estate entities.

This pilot seeks to develop and test a better approach to rental applications in Australia. Rental applications currently involve handing over a lot of identity documents and financial information to real estate agents or landlords.

Use of Digital ID for rental applications means real estate agents and landlords no longer check or store identity documents, enhancing privacy, security and convenience.

Similarly, a real estate agent or landlord can receive an indication from the CDR that an applicant can afford the rent, instead of receiving payslips and bank statements.

This also enhances privacy, security and convenience for people applying for rental properties.
